Weather Excites me

I have had an obsession with the weather since I was a young child. Some may consider me to be borderline obsessed. I’m okay with that. I haven’t been as involved in forecasting as much as I have been over the years. I noticed a growing trend with myself – whenever bad weather is expected to hit then that’s when I get into forecasting mode.

It’s strange to me because I have always had a passion, always had a drive to try to forecast the weather. Now that’s gone somewhat. It’s strange because a part of me wants to do it, but another is removed from it.

Anyway, the weather has been too quiet up here in North Country. Almost eerily quiet and uneventful. I would have never imagined that my house in New Jersey would see more snow than Plattsburgh New York. I guess there is always a first for everything.

Snowy

Plattsburgh New York looks like a winter wonderland.  The trees are covered with a white powdery snow and the wind is whipping. Today is one of those days where you grab a cup of hot cocoa, tea and or coffee and sit by a nice warm fire. This is surprisingly the first snowfall of the season here in Plattsburgh New York. My hometown in central New Jersey received its first snowfall over the past weekend beating the small upstate New York community of Plattsburgh by a few days. In fact, the Champlain Valley tied history by having one of the latest snowfalls on record.

Snow started to fall just around day break and is still falling at the time of this post. Roads are slippery so please, please be careful if you are traveling around the region. Don’t rush and give yourself ample amount of time to get to and from your destination. If you’re flying around the Northeast click here for an updated delay map.

I took some video around noon time today and would like to share it with you on the blog:

I would love to see some pictures and or videos from the storm. Leave a comment about your thoughts on the storm, leave a picture and or video! I’ll post all videos and images on the blog! All work will be properly cited.

Snow Car

There is something up with the December 5th time frame. Every year over the past couple of years there has always been a hint of snow falling during this time frame across southern New England.

Take New York City for example. In 2003, eight inches of fresh snow fell on this date. Little snow fell in 2005 with a trace amount of snow accumulation. 0.3 inches of snow fell in 2007.  Snow storms do like this time period for whatever reason.

I know the above picture is a bit dramatic for today’s snow. The amount of snow expected to fall across the entire region will be nowhere close to the amount in the picture.

Please check often because I will be periodically updating the website with weather updates on the storm. Please send me snow fall accumulation amounts and snow reports by leaving a comment or contacting me through the contact form.

» Click here for southern ME and portions of NH snowfall accumulations.

8:01 PM EDT UPDATE

» Snow will be tapering down across southern New England over the next couple of hours. The latest radar imagery shows the back edge of the precipitation around Salisbury Maryland. Snow is expected to be moderate/heavy over the next couple of hours. Snowfall accumulations of 1-3″ with locally higher amounts of 4-6″ possible across NW NJ and NE PA.

Further towards the north across the Hudson Valley of NY, CT, RI, MA, eastern/southern VT, NH, southern ME… Snow will continue to impact the region and can be heavy at times. Snow will continue through the overnight and should come to an end by early tomorrow morning. Snow accumulations of 1-3″ with isolated higher amounts possible.

Upstate NY, western/northern VT…dry air has been in place for most of the day. Snow may develop later on if the atmosphere can become moist enough. Appears likely that the greatest threat will be a couple of snow showers/flurries with possible periods of snow further to the east into north/central and north/ eastern portions of Vermont. Amounts will  likely be around T-1″ with higher amounts across the higher elevations.

Northeastern ME…Snow will continue to be heavy at times through the overnight. Snow should continue through the morning hours on Sunday. Snow will likely accumulate to 4-7″.

According to the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center’s website, Newark Liberty International Airport is still experiencing a flight arrival delay of approximately 2 hours and 43 minutes. Philadelphia International Airport is still experiencing on average 1 hour and 19 minutes delays. Please check with your airline carrier for more information on flight delays. Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport were the only airports in the Northeast to report airline delays.

Please allow yourself extra time to get to and from your destination as roads may be icy and slippery.

6:22 PM EDT UPDATE

» Snow continues to fall across much of the eastern portion of the Northeast. Snowfall accumulations across the New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York City metro areas should be on the light side. Accumulations of 1-3″ with possibly higher amounts further to the west of 2-4″ possible. Snow should taper off between 10 PM and 1 AM.

Across New England, high pressure continues to influence our weather. Eastern New England is facing the snow, while western areas like Upstate western NY is seeing dry conditions. Snow showers and snow is possible albeit light. Accumulations are not expected unless you are in the higher elevations. Portions of VT, NH, western and southern ME, MA, CT and RI could pick up 1-3″ of snowfall accumulations. Northeastern ME could pick up as much as 3-7″ of new snow tonight.

According to the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center’s website, Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing a flight arrival delay of approximately 2 hours and 43 minutes. Philadelphia International Airport is experiencing on average 1 hour and 19 minutes delays. Please check with your airline carrier for more information on flight delays. Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport were the only airports in the Northeast to report airline delays.

Please allow yourself extra time to get to and from your destination as roads may be icy and slippery.

Stay tuned for continual coverage on this winter storm!

Seriously, what’s up with all of this cold weather?

And I also believe that Mother Nature did “spit” (which is a local term for flurry) snow throughout the afternoon. At first it was like a feeling of disbelief but then reality set in with the wind whipping and snow gently falling from the sky.

To put things in perspective:

City, State Avg High Yesterday Actual Difference
Plattsburgh, NY 58° 41° -17°
Albany, NY 60° 48° -12°
New York, NY 64° 53° -11°
Boston, MA 62° 52° -10°
Philadelphia, PA 63° 51° -12°
Rochester, NY 60° 45° -15°

Majority of the highs we saw yesterday are those that we see in November. Yikes!
