The internet just like media is evolving. It’s changing and transforming. However there is an online trend that is developing. We’re seeing more and more restricted content.
For many of us – we have seen a relatively free internet. Some services were charged, but for the most part access was free.
Another trend that we’re seeing with the internet is that it has nothing to do with computers. Internet is accessed through multiple devices like iPhones, cellphones, iPods and now the iPad. Each of these devices have their own unique applications, operating system and style.
As the web continues to move into the spotlight – should we pay for services on the web or should they be free? Keep in mind that people create websites, produce content, code and engineer those applications on your phone. A bigger question is what would this do the internet?
Rumors have been going around that Apple will be launching the Apple Tablet sometime in early 2010. Apple has kept their lips sealed on the Apple Tablet for some time now. According to Business Week, “A source familiar with Apple’s product plans says that the company plans to introduce a tablet-based device in early 2010.” Much of the details of the Apple Tablet is up to speculation.
What does this product mean for consumers and journalists? It seems that the speculation on the specs seem to make this like a larger version of the Apple iPod Touch or iPhone.
With the product predicted to have a larger 10 inch screen, the tablet would be useful for people who wanted to watch videos and or read material like books or magazines. Personally, I believe that this could open the door for digital versions of magazines and newspapers. This could be a way for print journalists to open the door into a more digital form.
As a student journalist, I see the tablet as a way to already enhance what we already have available. I think this new technology will have a larger impact on the print journalism than on the broadcast journalism end. However, I would use this product as a way to help me with my stories. Although a smaller device like a smart phone could achieve just that.
With all of these questions, what do you think? Do you think the Apple Tablet will change things for journalism? If so, how? Would you use the Apple Tablet as a consumer? Also please vote on the poll below!
