Traditional Journalism: Is It Old News?

Posted by | Media | No Comments

I have heard the argument that traditional journalism (newspapers, TV, radio, etc.) are going to become extinct. Some people will say that they are a dying breed of news content.

While we are seeing readership and advertising revenues slip, it’s hard to say that they are becoming extinct. I believe that these mediums will evolve with the changing media consumption habits.

This infographic addresses the changes we have seen in journalism over the past few years:

Do you think traditional journalism is old news?

Pew: Why People Are Leaving News Organizations

Posted by | Media | No Comments

The reason some people leave news organizations is not all that surprising .

According to Pew Research Center:

“Nearly one-third of Americans abandoned a particular news outlet because it no longer provides the same level of news and information.”

In these tough economic times, news organizations have been forced to layoff reporters and other staff members vital to producing quality news content. Without them, there are noticeable holes and gaps in our news reporting.

It’s not surprising that another reason people are leaving news organizations is because they are not producing quality reports.

According to the survey, “About half—48%—of respondents said stories are not as thorough as they were before.”

Why have you left or followed a news organization?

Report: More People Getting News Through Digital Platforms

Back in February 2013, I wrote about how news organizations need to establish a mobile-first newsroom.

Consumers are not just consuming the news in their homes, they’re consuming it wherever they are and in larger quantities.

According to the 2013 State of the Media report, 39% of respondents got news online or from a mobile device yesterday (the day before they participated in the survey), up from 34% in 2010.

This number is catching up to television news consumption. It has already surpassed radio and newspaper news consumption.

What platform do you consume the most news on? Online?, TV?, Radio?, Newspaper?
