A new study by the University of Michigan states that frequent Twitter and Facebook might be narcissists.
According to a press release issued by University of Michigan, researchers have examined whether narcissism was related to the number of posts on Facebook and Twitter. Researchers also considered the amount of time on each of the social media sites, including reading and comments.
“It’s about curating your own image, how you are seen, and also checking on how others respond to this image,” Researcher Elliot Panek said. “Middle-aged adults usually have already formed their social selves, and they use social media to gain approval from those who are already in their social circles.”
The survey found that narcissistic college students used Twitter, but middle-aged adults posted more frequently on Facebook.
This was the first time researchers looked into whether there was a relationship between narcissism and different kinds of social media in different age groups. Researchers say they were unable to “determine whether narcissism lead to an increase in use of social media, whether social media use promotes narcissism, or whether some other factors explain the relationship.”
