Here are some facts about Mart Luther King Jr. Day:

  1. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986. It wasn’t until 2000 when the holiday was observed in all 50 states1.
  2. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He divided the prize money of $54,000 among various civil rights organizations2
  3. The bill to remember Martin Luther King Jr. was signed into law on November 2, 1983 by Ronald Reagan3.
  4. In 1973, Illinois is the first state to adopt Martin Luther King, Jr. as a state holiday4.
  5. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 19685.
